The why & what of scalp exfoliation
It’s a no-brainer that you already know, your hair roots need to be stronger and nourished to help your hair grow stronger, then there’s the scalp upon which your hair grows, but…
What would you do when this scalp is impure with dirt, flaky patches, excess oil being produced and retained, the hair oil that your shampoo didn’t wash off, or the post-wash hair mask which left residue on your scalp?
Did this give you a feeling that your scalp is largely ignored but this is the part that needs a thorough cleanse? This is exactly why you need to exfoliate your scalp.
Scalp exfoliation is a simple yet significant process of deeply cleansing your scalp, which liberates your scalp from :
- Dandruff & Flakes
- Product residue
- Excess oil production
- Dryness & dullness
- Producing scalp acne
- Itchiness
- Dead skin cells
How therapeutic does it feel to even imagine what this simple step can do to your overall hair?
Benefits of scalp exfoliation
What can you expect after exfoliating your scalp? As clichéd as it may sound, healthy hair growth is what you can expect. To add more substance to this fact, here are some of the benefits of exfoliating your scalp
- A fresh & clean scalp allows more space for new hair to grow
- Chances of excess oil production will be largely reduced, thereby making your hair look fresh & lustrous
- Hair breakage will be prevented, which in turn will result in lesser hair loss as well.
- Severe scalp issues can be prevented well in advance
-
You don’t need to spend a lot of money on different products to treat these concerns
But, wait, how will you know, that scalp exfoliation is a step that your scalp really needs? Fair question, to make it easier for you, we’ve listed down some of the major scalp concerns, which include
- Hair weighed down due to dullness & dryness
- Frequent itchiness & dry flaky patches on certain parts
- Hair looks oily the very next day after hair wash, due to excess oil being produced
- Excessive hair fall even when none of the products are the cause of this
If you’ve experienced any one or more of the listed concerns, your scalp is in dire need of an exfoliation.
How can one exfoliate their scalp?
Based on your hair type & preference, you can choose any one of these methods to exfoliate your scalp, but please remember not to overdo it.
Physical Exfoliation
- Use a gentle scalp brush or massaging tool with soft bristles to scrub your scalp while shampooing.
Chemical Exfoliation
- Opt for shampoos or scalp solutions containing active ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). These chemicals help break down and remove dead skin cells on the scalp and excess oil.
Our very own scalp exfoliating solution from JOHI is an excellent solution infused with the star ingredient for exfoliation namely, Salicylic acid. Along with this BHA is the presence of Fludipure, a cleaning agent that’s best suited to clean the surface of the skin, in this case, the skin of the scalp, without leaving any residue behind.
Apart from these 2 ways to exfoliate, there is also natural exfoliation that can be DIY’ed which can at times come across as harsh on the skin of your scalp, hence we suggest you either opt for Physical exfoliation( with no harsh objects) or Chemical exfoliation, the application of which is easy and hassle-free.
Now how often can one exfoliate?
If you’re opting for a Chemical exfoliant, do read the instructions mentioned on the product as that would specify how many times a week can the product be used to exfoliate your scalp and for how long should it be left on your scalp before you wash it off.
Regards to physical exfoliation, this can be done once or for a maximum of two times a week, purely based on your scalp & hair needs. If you feel that the hair is greasy & needs a deep cleanse, watch your hair’s appearance & go ahead with the process of exfoliation.
Could there be any side effects of scalp exfoliation?
Any process over done, will have its consequences so the first rule of thumb is not to over-exfoliate. In general, there may be side effects of over-exfoliation such as
- Scalp dryness
- Irritation from any allergic ingredient used in Physical/Chemical exfoliation
- Imbalanced PH level
- If your hair is coloured, over-exfoliating can fade the colour sooner than it should.
Always test a product, more so for your scalp before you fully begin to use it. This way, you’ll figure out the side effects if any, sooner.
There’s one common question that prevails among many, which is what is the difference between dandruff and product build-up? If you too have this question, here’s a simple answer Dandruff is flakes from your scalp caused by dryness. Dandruff can appear as small white flakes on your scalp which at times falls onto your shoulder. Product build-up is when hair products like shampoo or styling sprays and creams collect on your hair and scalp, making it feel greasy and heavy, like a sticky mess.
Another concern, some individuals may suffer from is witnessing scalp peeling in chunks. This can occur in individuals due to weather that mainly dries up the scalp skin, or genetics in some. It is highly suggested to consult a dermatologist or trichologist at the earliest to understand the true cause of this & treat the scalp from this discomfort.
If you could do your hair a favour, then try to incorporate scalp exfoliation as a part of your routine. Using our scalp exfoliating solution, all you would need is 10 minutes of your self-care time, to gently apply this solution all over your scalp, and let it work its magic.
In the first use itself, you’ll start checking off, your scalp issues one by one and you’ll start writing in your gratitude journal, how grateful you are for a clean, clear & healthy bed of scalp.
